Ants: Leaf-al Warfare

As part of a university project, I was contracted to work on Ants: Leaf-al Warfare, a game based on Worms W.M.D

The game is a Side on orthographic 3D artillery turn-based tactics video game (local)(PvP), featuring a variety of ants as the main playable characters, Players must protect their queen ant while attempting to take out their opponents.

My Role in the Project was environmental 3D Asset Creation. This involved creating 3D assets which had to be designed with the intention of being either destructible or have ants traverse over/through them.

Models were also created to fit the requirements to blend with shaders in engine.

The video below is part of a fly by showcase of the environment mainly focusing on the areas I helped to develop.

3D Model Images

3D Models worked on through the project including wireframe shots. The assets were created by me in response to weekly briefs as a contractor on the team. Each model had its own unique challenge and way in which it was produced.

Summary of contributions

  • Designed, developed and prototyped various 3D destructible / collapsible assets within Autodesk 3DS Max imported into unity and assigned as a prefab with shader materials.

  • Designed 3D assets to be traversable via by players allowing them to use the models for strategic advantage within the game, additionally game balance was considered in the design.

  • Worked with Adobe Substance Painter to generate high to low poly backing to add detail to model while keeping model low poly for increased performance and model topology optimization.

  • Textured 3D Models using Abode Substance Painter primarily using modified base colour maps so that the shaders work well with models material maps.

  • Worked with Unity Packages such as ProBuilder to generate a prototype shape for models, taken into 3DS Max and then developed into full shape models that fit the existing block-out of the environment.

  • Worked as a quality assurance play tester for the game reporting bugs and working with the programing department to replicate issues so they can be appropriately fixed.

Ants: Leaf-al Warfare is now LIVE on Steam

As of July 1st, Ants: Leaf-al Warfare is live on Steam. having been a part of its art and design team I am very proud to have this title shipped to market, please check out the steam page below.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3777550/Ants_Leafal_Warfare/

Please note the game is designed to work as a 2 player local PvP game otherwise it will function incorrectly. I am not responsible for bugs included in the release of the game and only had responsibility over 3D props for this project as a contractor.

Ants: Leaf-al Warfare Has gained over 5k library additions in the first week and over 9k total

As of 02/08/2025 these are the current statistics of ants on steam, as my first market release and one with witch I was entrusted to produce quality game assets for I could not be happier with the ongoing results.
